About Mathew Harper

I am an actor, singer, and performer based in New York City... who specializes in theatrical and character acting.

I most recently starred as “Ichabod Crane” in Sleepy Hollow at the Parkway Playhouse, and sang with Cassie Nadeau and the Red Hot Blues band here in New York City

Other theatrical credits include playing “Princeton” in Avenue Q at Asheville Community Theater, “Aiden” in It’s Just a Pill with the Mountain Area Health and Education Center (MAHEC), “Simon” in Stone Soup at the Hendersonville Center for Arts and Inspiration, “Riff Raff” in The Rocky Horror Show at the Grey Eagle, and “Patrick Dennis” in MAME at the Haywood Arts Regional Theater.

I studied theater and conservation biology at Warren Wilson College. My current training includes; vocal coaching with Mike Ruckles Studio under Wayne Shuker, Scene study with Actor's Axiom under James Ciccone, Acting under the tutelage of Candace Taylor in Acting at Warren Wilson, and a Puppetry masterclass with Broadway actress Jennifer Barnhart. I am self taught in singing but competitive karaoke definitely helped me get my chops. When I'm not on stage, I am a professional sommelier and never miss an opportunity to expand my knowledge in any field.

My love of theater started at an early age. I had the opportunity to work behind the scenes as a stagehand and technical crewman for Street Theater Company in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 16. After working on the productions of Really Rosie and The Secret Garden, I immediately jumped at the opportunity to successfully audition for supporting roles in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Cats. I continued to spend every moment at the theater studying acting — learning more then I could’ve ever learned in a classroom. A few years later, I earned my first regional role in MAME at the Haywood Arts Regional Theater. In addition to acting, singing, and performing, I find great joy in teaching myself dance and circus arts including hip hop, modern, jazz, fire spinning/breathing/eating, lyra, hoop dance, and cyr wheel.

I love challenging myself and take pride in playing a variety of roles from classical to character parts. I don’t think I’ll ever stop singing as long as I live. I will always perform for Oliver — my Corgi mix and number one fan
